Keeping Children Safe Online

The digital world presents incredible opportunities for children to learn and connect, but it also comes with risks that every parent should understand. This guide covers the most important areas.

Social Media & Privacy

Most social media platforms require users to be 13 or older. Review privacy settings on all your child's accounts and ensure profiles are set to private.

  • Check privacy settings on all apps and devices regularly
  • Discuss what is and isn't appropriate to share online
  • Know who your child is communicating with
  • Establish open communication about online experiences

Recognising Online Grooming

Grooming can happen on any platform where children interact. Be aware of signs such as secrecy about online activity, new gifts, or emotional changes.

  • Excessive secrecy about online activity
  • Receiving gifts or money from unknown sources
  • Sudden changes in behaviour or mood
  • Spending increasing time online, especially at night

Age-Appropriate Guidelines

Ages 5-8: Supervised access only. Use parental controls. No social media accounts.

Ages 9-12: Gradually increasing access with monitoring. Discuss online safety regularly. Review app permissions together.

Ages 13-17: Open dialogue about risks. Establish trust-based boundaries. Encourage reporting of uncomfortable encounters.

If you suspect a child is being groomed or exploited online, report it immediately through the CRI app or contact your local Garda station.
